What does it mean?

What does Battery 5/5/90 mean?

Battery 5/5/90 refers to a standardised duty cycle used to estimate the battery life of two-way radios and similar communication devices. It describes how the device is typically used during a given period:

Breakdown of the 5/5/90 Duty Cycle:

  • 5% Transmit: The radio is actively transmitting (sending voice or data).

  • 5% Receive: The radio is actively receiving transmissions from others.

  • 90% Standby: The radio is idle but powered on, ready to receive or transmit.

What is a IP rating?

IP55 rated devices are suitable for environments where there might be exposure to moderate dust and low-pressure jets of water. It's not fully dust-tight or waterproof for immersion.

IP67 provides a higher level of protection compared to IP55. It is dust tight and offers protection against temporary immersion up to 1m.

IP66 is an Ingress Protection (IP) rating that indicates a device is dust tight and offers protection against high-pressure jets of water.

IP68 indicates that a device is dust tight and offers protection against immersion up to 3m.

What is a channel and what is a zone?

A channel is a specific frequency or talk path programmed into the radio. A zone is a collection or grouping of channels. It helps organise channels into manageable sets, especially when there are many channels programmed into the radio.

What is a phon?

The term "phon" is a unit of measurement used in acoustics to describe the perceived loudness of a sound. It relates the perceived intensity of a sound to its actual sound pressure level (measured in decibels, dB).
